Verification of Social Security Number
For an Iowa Driver's License or ID Card

To help prevent another person from obtaining a license or ID with your name on it, the DOT must have your Social Security number.

To ensure the DOT has your correct Social Security number, verification is limited to the following documentation:

  • Social Security card.  A metal version of the card is not acceptable.
  • Previous Iowa license or ID if the Social Security number was used.
  • IRS or state tax document completed by the governmental agency.  A W-2, 1040, 1040A, 1040EZ and related forms completed by the taxpayer are not acceptable.
  • Financial statement containing the Social Security number.
  • Payroll stub containing the Social Security number.
  • Military ID card containing the Social Security number.

If applying for a first-time Iowa Commercial Driver's License (CDL), you must present your actual Social Security Card. This will insure that the Commercial Driver License Information System (CDLIS) is updated correctly.

If you are a temporary foreign national who is not authorized for employment, the DOT may waive the Social Security Number requirement for a non-commercial driver's license or identification card. However, you must present your immigration documents so that the DOT can record the BCIS (INS) number in lieu of the Social Security Number.

The law calls for a number other than the social security number to be used for licenses and IDs, so an assigned number will be used as your license or ID number.
