Gold Star License Plate
Supporting the Iowa Commission of Veterans Affairs
Who is Eligible:  An owner who is the surviving spouse, parent, child, or sibling of a deceased member of the United States Armed Forces who died while serving on “active” duty during a time of military conflict.
Requirements: The owner of the vehicle must be a surviving spouse, parent, child, or sibling of a deceased member of the United States Armed Forces who died while serving on “active duty" during a time of military conflict or who died as a result of such service. The application must be accompanied with satisfactory supporting documentation approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs. All applications must be sent to the Iowa Department of Veterans Affairs for approval before a plate can be ordered.

The Iowa Department of Veterans Affairs needs sufficient official documentation showing lineage of applicant to the deceased veteran and documentation that the veteran is deceased due to military service.

Documentation that the veteran died as a result of military service:
    Report of Casualty;
    Military Certificate of Death (Overseas);
    Beneficiary’s Application for (War) Service Compensation State of Iowa; or
    Federal Veterans Affairs rating indicating a service connected death.

--AND--

Pertinent documentation indicating relationship to the deceased veteran:
    Birth certificate(s)
    Marriage certificate
    Adoption records
    One of the above deceased veteran documents proving the service
           connected death, that has the applicants name on it.

Numbered Plate Fee:
  • $25 initial plate fee*
  • $5 annual validation fee*
  • Annual registration renewal fee

*Note:  The $25 initial plate fee and the $5 annual validation fee will be credited to the Veterans License Fee Fund.

Plates (including personalized plates) may be purchased as a gift.  Gift certificates will be mailed to the purchaser.

Personalized Plate Fee:
  • $50 initial fee*
  • $5 annual validation fee*
  • Annual registration renewal fee

*Note:  $25 of the personalized plate fee and the $5 annual validation fee will be credited to the Veterans License Fee Fund.

Personalized license plates may consist of up to five characters and numbers.   All personalized plate choices must have at least two characters.

  • No punctuation marks are allowed.
  • No denoting a government agency (i.e., DOT ).
  • No display of characters which are sexual in connotation.
  • No characters suggesting profane, obscene or inflammatory words or phrases, or those contrary to public policy.
  • No characters or words defined in dictionaries as a term of vulgarity, contempt, prejudice, hostility, insult, or racial or ethnic degradation.
  • No characters considered to be offensive.
  • No characters that conflict with the regular license numbering system.
  • Recognized as a swear word.
  • Reference to an illegal substance or criminal act.
  • Any foreign word falling in any of these categories.
  • No duplicate combination of characters, such as:
    A0000 through Z9999 AA000 through ZZ999
    0000A through 9999Z A000 through Z999
    000AA through 999ZZ Numbers only

Your plates will be sent to your county treasurer's office and they will notify you when your plates are ready.  Plates must be assigned to a vehicle within 90 days or the plates will be voided and no refund issued.  Your current plates must be exchanged for your new plates.
